Dated: April 2000
- I have traveled across the United States 6 times...and that's just
the big trips!
When I started to finally understand the power of
the internet to connect people to people,
I thought "hey...I could plan all our trips online before we go!"
Yeah, right.
Instead, our trip went like this: and keep in
mind the year is 2000.
"I wonder how far the next gas station is
?"
"How much further to the next RV
park...and how much are they going to charge ?"
(And then, of course, having to drive all around town to
find the lowest rate.)
"I wonder if there's a tobacco store
here."
"Excuse me, sir/madam, is there a Super
Wal-Mart around ?"
Insert whatever question you may have when you get into a new
town, and that's how our trip went.
Unfortunately, I don't have a wireless modem or a "palm
pilot," but if I did, I should have been able to tap right in, find out
where the next gas station, RV park & prices, tobacco store, and Super Wal-Mart were
-- while driving along!
Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of stuff online, but
it's not very well integrated to suit local area needs. And the places that do
integrate areas only list major cities.
I tried to design the Defuniak Springs area page to suit the needs
of newcomers (like zip code & local calling area information) and natives
(like current gas prices). Of course, for now, I only listed what I always
needed to know about an area, so it's not yet comprehensive. Meaning that if you
have a question, or would like to make an addition to the Defuniak Springs page...please
e-mail me, and I'll help
in any way I can.
If you haven't yet realized,
the internet is about people to people...not
computers to people
--if people don't participate,
the internet will become useless not trusted
information !
